LONG LIVE ROBOBILLY

rockin out at the Station

Saturday night was epic.  Viva Carrboro.

Brand New Life at the Cradle

This post is a bit belated (the past two weeks have been an epic whirlwind) but better late than never.  The Brand New Life played a killer show at Cat’s Cradle last week. They’re in the middle of a whirlwind too - touring all over the place, doing the damn thing and doing it well.  Very, very proud of them.

curious

I did some filming at the Human Rights Center in Carrboro last night.  Right now the HRC is just a small, humble house that has been converted into a kind of office/group gathering space for the Latino community but it serves a very important purpose.  Volunteers offer translation services, English lessons and childcare.  This little girl (and the bright colors all around her) caught my eye. She was wide-eyed and curious but exceptionally well-behaved as her mom completed a worksheet.

Deep Chatham!

North Carolina is rich in bluegrass bands but I firmly believe that Deep Chatham is some of the best home-grown music you can find in this state.  Sure, I’m biased and I don’t care.  These boys are SO talented.  We had a great time dancing to some of their new songs at the Station last night.  Great band, great bar, great night.

Oh Owen.

Another one of my favorite musicians to photograph, Owen Fitzgerald.  Fantastic to see him perform at the Station last night.  After his show we were sitting cross-legged on the floor together and he said, “I know I haven’t seen you much lately Marley but I want you to know I’ve been thinking about you.”  I appreciate that homie, much love.

Southern Rail Sunset

I went to visit Sage at work on Saturday afternoon and while I was waiting for her to seat some folks, I snapped this photo.  This is another one I took with my phone (I guess I’ll just have to get over my stigma about cell phone photography - I blame the photo department in the journalism school for that one but I won’t get into that here.)

Anyway, winter sunsets are nice but I really need to photograph something else.

Happy New Year!  Happy Birthday G!

On Saturday night we celebrated Gia’s 25th birthday, the start of 2012 and the successful production of the fifth annual Carrboro Winter Cocktail.  It was a fabulous affair - Beth made that gorgeous (and enormous - 4 layers!) birthday cake and approximately 100 people were in attendance to sing happy birthday to the beautiful Gia Branciforte.

Oh Skylar

I never get tired of photographing this woman and I’m so proud of how much she has developed as a musician and a performer over the years that I’ve known her.

So Skylar Gudasz and the Ugly Girls played at the Station last night as part of the Americana Revue series.  The Sinful Savage Tigers (including the ever so sexy Seth Barden) also played.  It was an awesome night of music and old friends.  I love all the musicians in my life.

Skylar, I fell asleep with your songs stuck in my head.  sweet, sweet lullabies.
